In a startling revelation, new data show that the South West of England, specifically Devon and Somerset, experienced the highest number of chimney fires in the past year. Between April 2024 and March 2025, crews were called to respond to 181 incidents in these areas alone, significantly outpacing the second-highest region, Dorset and Wiltshire, which recorded 113 chimney fire incidents.
The analysis conducted by HETAS (Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme) coincides with Chimney Fire Safety Week, which runs from September 1 to 7. According to Steve Fisher, a community risk manager with the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, the most critical measure homeowners can take is to ensure that their chimneys are swept by a qualified professional before they ignite their first fire of the season.
Interestingly, despite being the region with the most chimney fires, there has been a remarkable decrease in such incidents, with a 75% reduction since 2013. Fisher emphasizes the importance of regular chimney cleaning and maintenance to prevent potential fire hazards, advising against homeowners attempting to clean their chimneys themselves. Proper inspection is key to ensuring the chimney is safe for use, as neglect can lead to serious consequences, including structural damage and water issues from firefighting efforts.
Moreover, Fisher cautions against using unconventional fuels, such as foraged wood, in an attempt to economize amid rising energy prices. The prevalence of chimney fires in Somerset and Devon may also be correlated with the region's numerous thatched roofs and its predominantly rural landscape.
On a national scale, chimney fires have decreased by 5%, comprising less than 0.5% of all reported fires in England. As Chimney Fire Safety Week unfolds, the statistics serve as a critical reminder for homeowners to prioritize chimney safety and maintenance.
