In a shocking case of arson, Israel Baber, a 37-year-old resident of Eccleston House in Bristol, has been convicted of deliberately igniting a fire in the building’s stairwell, resulting in injuries to six individuals. The incident took place on October 20, 2022, when Baber set fire to a sofa just after 6:00 AM GMT. Despite denying his involvement, a jury at Bristol Crown Court found him guilty of arson that recklessly endangered lives.
The blaze necessitated the evacuation of residents who had to escape using an alternative staircase due to smoke filling the area. Three individuals required hospitalization for smoke inhalation, although fortunately, none suffered serious injuries. The fire caused substantial property damage, exceeding £450,000.
CCTV and doorbell camera footage captured Baber's movements within the building around the time the fire started, contradicting his claims of remaining in his flat during that period. Det Ch Insp Laura Miller, the senior investigating officer, remarked on the potential for a much worse outcome, highlighting the severe danger posed by Baber’s actions. She pointed out that he refused to accept responsibility throughout the investigation.
As the case unfolded, Det Con Michael Tarling acknowledged the community's vital support in response to the incident, noting the collaborative efforts of Bristol City Council in establishing rest centers for displaced residents. Baber is currently in custody, pending sentencing, which is scheduled for March 24, 2023.
Officials have lauded the local community's involvement in aiding the investigation and providing support during this challenging event.
