Transport for London (TfL) has announced that, starting March 31, non-folding e-bikes will be prohibited on certain parts of London’s transport network to enhance customer and staff safety.
Commenting on the decision, London Fire Brigade Deputy Commissioner for Prevention, Protection & Policy, Charlie Pugsley, expressed support for TfL’s move following their comprehensive safety review. He emphasized the well-documented risks associated with e-bike batteries.
"While we acknowledge the environmental benefits of e-bikes and micro-mobility in general, the fact remains that London experiences an e-bike or e-scooter fire nearly every other day. We are particularly concerned about the dangers posed by conversion kits and modified e-bikes. These fires can ignite suddenly, burn intensely, and release highly toxic smoke," he stated.
Through the London Fire Brigade’s #ChargeSafe campaign, efforts have been focused on raising awareness of fire hazards and educating the public on safe storage and charging of e-bikes. The brigade is also actively collaborating with the Government to strengthen regulations around e-bikes and e-scooters. Pugsley expressed hope that stricter regulations will help prevent consumers from purchasing substandard batteries and chargers, particularly those sold on online marketplaces or auction sites, where safety standards may not always be met.
