Fire Safety Scare: High-Rise Flats in Worcester Under Scrutiny!

Worcester is facing serious fire safety concerns as three high-rise buildings, Henwick House, Cripplegate House, and Severn House, failed recent fire safety inspections. These buildings, constructed in 1969 and managed by Platform Housing Group, underwent a turbine of checks prompted by worries related to their former contractor, Tri Fire Ltd.

Following a sector-wide initiative addressed by Tri Fire Ltd's fire safety assessments, the inspections revealed significant issues with the external wall systems of the buildings. However, a spokesperson for Platform Housing Group stated that Tri Fire Ltd is not recognized by professional fire safety organizations anymore, particularly after its director, Adam Kiziak, faced investigation for possible malpractice by the Institution of Fire Engineers, resulting in his suspension in August 2024.

Despite the alarming findings, Platform Housing Group assures residents that the buildings are safe for habitation. This claim is backed by independent fire safety specialists and Hereford and Worcester Fire Authority, who confirmed the properties' safety, especially with new temporary safety measures in place.

These precautionary measures encompass the introduction of a 24/7 on-site fire safety support team, a temporary closure of the Sky Lounge in Cripplegate House due to its upper-floor location, and the implementation of daytime-only mobility scooter charging to reduce fire risk overnight. Furthermore, the emergency evacuation plans for residents with mobility challenges are being revised and updated.

The Platform Housing Group has taken active steps to communicate with affected residents, including direct notifications, one-on-one support, and onsite drop-in sessions to keep the community informed. Chief executive Elizabeth Froude emphasized that safety remains the organization’s utmost priority, indicating a commitment to ensuring residents feel secure and supported.

Local authorities and elected officials are also being kept in the loop about these developments. Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service’s Group Commander, Deb Davies, noted that the fire service is collaborating closely with Platform Housing Group to implement temporary measures while emphasizing public safety.

The situation underlines the increasing scrutiny on fire safety standards across housing associations and the need for robust, trustworthy fire safety evaluations in the wake of past tragedies.
